Georgian Coral Creole Hoop Earrings
An absolutely marvellous and rare pair of coral creole earrings from the Georgian period, c1780s/90s. The earrings have fabulous carved natural coral sections that have been seemingly thread onto gold wire in a criss cross design. They are rigid in their structure and have 15ct gold Georgian earring fittings. The wire fittings thread through the ear and there is a little catch that inserts into a hole behind the ear to fasten them. The wires that thread through the ears are complete with little loops that would have been used to clip onto a wig! These earrings are truly wonderful and in immaculate condition.
Coral was particularly popular in the Georgian period due to the belief that it contained protective powers. The more orange the coral, the more healthy the person wearing it was believed to be. These particular earrings have kept their colour over the many years and are a wonderful collectors piece.
